Restore Your Z

If you are interested in a quality restoration of your Datsunz 240Z, 260Z, 280Z or 300ZX automobile, you've come to the right place. We will do whatever it takes to keep your Z-car on the road.

Because many original parts are no longer available new, Petaluma Auto Works offers a varied selection of good used parts. The parts we use on our restoration projects are tested, cleaned, and rebuilt and are designed to meet or exceed the exacting standards of the original parts.

We also carry a large inventory of new and hard to find parts for all 1969-1986 Z cars. During our restorations, we use genuine Nissan OEM parts as well as excellent quality aftermarket parts, we offer only the best to our valued customers. We have been in the business of keeping the Z cars on the road for 21 years and have been collecting hard to find parts for our projects for many years, allowing us to save you money yet meet your restoration needs.

Our prices are competitive, and our work is excellent and exceptional. We know your car is important to you, and that is why we are here. Z cars are our business, so you can be sure our knowlegde is unbeatable.

All restorations are contracted on a "Time & Materials" basis. Below is a general overview of restoration steps:

Inspection and evaluation: Stage One

Wash and inspect vehicle, make a list of parts needed that can be seen at this time. Make a list of labor and materials that can be estimated at this point.

Remove all parts---interior, glass, motor, transmission, dash. Bead blast parts or sand blast as needed to clean. We discuss what the action plan will be.

Organize loose parts, take detailed photos, store parts for future use, save all parts until vehicle is finished. This is very important.

Clean, strip and protect metal parts, do the metal repairs and body work.

Engine Work : Stage Two

Mechanical work is now contracted, we can install a motor the customer supplies or we can customize any other motor per customer's wishes. When choosing your engine, what you are going to do with the car is very important, will it be a daily driver or all about power? Ideally you should have both, a daily driver with awesome performance that is still street legal. Other considerations might be; fuel injection or traditional carbs? Compression ratio? Turbo-charged or super-charged? Will you be using regular gas from the pumps? There are also low mile crated engines ready to install with the manufacture's warranty. Transmission, headers, exhaust, suspension.....now fun begins, the car is coming together.

Prime and Paint: Stage Three

The following steps are an over simplification of the actual process, our body man, Jasun Barry, is a perfectionist when it comes to his restorations, and I could never cover and detail all of his skills and knowledge when it comes to body work. First step is to turn the car you working on into a "roller", back on it's chassis and wheels. It has the drivetrain and suspension and is mobile. Grounding the car helps eliminate dust particles in the atmosphere, (static electricity) that later will appear as dirt on the finished paint product. The chassis and unibody are complete and awaiting the finish paint work. The chassis and unibody are sprayed inside and out with Dupont 615S self etching primer to protect it from surface rust. Next we sand the bad spots to bare metal and fill them with body filler. The car is sanded with different grades of sandpaper, 100 grit, 220 grit and finally 220 grit wrapped around a sanding block.1.The car is sanded between every step, from rust inhibitor, through primer, paint and clear coat. Clean surface where you will be painting, mask off any parts you dont want paint to get onto, mix primer and paint thinner to the correct ratio, give the car at least 2-3 coats of primer, allow to dry to the set amount of hours of time (it should say on the primer can), use wet and dry sand paper with water to sand the primer surface nice and smooth, once finnished, apply 2-3 coats of automotive paint of your choise. (remembering to sand surface smooth in between coats), once finnished painting you now move on the the clear coat which gives your car a shine and protects your paint job. Repeat same steps as when you were painting.

Install Remaining Parts: Stage Four

All glass, windows, chrome, bumpers, carpets, seats and headliner are installed. The upholstery is contracted and agreed upon before we get to this point. Do we order new seats, upholster the existing ones, all of the interior customization detail is taken care of at this stage.

Install Motor, Transmission and brakes: Stage Five

This is the final step, involving the installation of the engine, transmission, brakes, radiator, carbs or fuel injection, air filters, tune up and the final electrical needs. The car is now ready to be test driven and tested for road worthiness.
